The Sacred Heart Food Bank services families who reside within St. Clair Township, Ward #2 – or the area formerly known as Sombra Township. Originally formed in the late 1960’s, the Sacred Heart Food Bank has evolved over time and received its charitable status in 2015. As a non-denominational group, religion has no influence on who receives assistance from the Food Bank. For many years, members of community organizations, local schools, and community churches have worked together to support between 50 – 70 families with food hampers at Christmas and 15 to 20 families on a more regular basis throughout the year. The Food Bank provides donated food, personal hygiene items and gift cards for families to purchase their own groceries. Last year volunteers collected and distributed over 5 tons of food and hygiene items for local families in need. Due to COVID-19, the annual canned food drive, which typically takes place every November, is significantly changed to protect the health and safety of canvassers and residents. The area to be canvassed, which extends east from the St Clair River to the Kimball Road and south from Bickford Line to Whitebread Line, will be divided into 5 smaller zones. The zones will be canvassed over a span of weeks allowing time for distancing and safety protocols to be met. Flyers will be distributed in mailboxes notifying residents when their specific zone will be canvassed and requesting residents to place their non-perishable food items out for contactless, porch/driveway pick up. Residents are reminded to please check to ensure product dates are current on donated items. Donated food & personal hygiene items can also be safely dropped off at the Port Lambton Anglican Church (corner of Lambton Line & Merritt St.) on each of the 5 Sundays listed below between 1 pm and 3 pm. Financial donations can be mailed to Sacred Heart Food Bank c/o Claudette Johnston, 243 Lambton Line Port Lambton, ONT N0P 2B0. Charitable Receipts will be issued for donations $20 or more.
